Studying F5

The F5 exam requires students to apply management accounting techniques in business environments. There are many types of questions there but the key question you should be able to answer is 'what does it all actually mean?' Modern and advance technology is capable of producing and introducing vast amounts of management accounting information but it will be used to help managers in making good decisions and manage everything effectively. The emphasis in F5 is therefore on sensible, realistic and practical elements and application to the real world. Be reminded that the exam does not set out to trick you: the paper will definitely be fair.

4 Brought forward knowledge

Candidates will should have a good working knowledge of basic management accounting from the earliest Paper F2. Chapter 1 of this Study Text (BPP) revises elements of costing, and further revision material is provided in other chapters (candidates will find when they will read the chapters), such as those on CVP analysis and variance analysis. If Candidates struggle with the examples and practice questions used to revise this knowledge, candidates should go back and revisit their previous work.

Revising F5

Topics to revise

All questions are compulsory so you must revise the entire syllabus. Since, the exam includes 15 multiple choice questions, candidates should expect questions to cover a large portion of the syllabus. Selective topics of revision will limit the number of questions you can answer and therefore, reduce candidates’ chances of passing. It is therefore, better to go into the exam knowing a reasonable and enough amount of most of the syllabus rather than concentrating on just a few topics to the exclusion of the rest.

Gaining the easy marks

Easy marks in this F5 exam tend to fall into three categories.

Multiple choice questions

Some MCQs will be easier than others. Answering those that candidates feel fairly confident about as quickly as they can. Come back later to those that candidates find more difficult. This could be a good way of making use of the time in the exam most efficiently and effectively.
Many MCQs will not include calculations. Make sure that candidates well understand the wording of 'written' MCQs before selecting their answer.

Calculations in Section C questions

There will be some relatively straightforward calculations in the exam at the start of the question and they will then probably get progressively more difficult. If candidates stuck, make an assumption, state it and move on.
